The breakfast superfood that I could literally have all day everyday...
Now, if you follow my rawfreshed instagram, you would know how much I absolutely adore my overnight oats; a considerably obvious notion since I do practically present my colorfully decorated overnight oats on a daily.
Yes overnight oats can be turned into beautiful masterpieces for for the likes of my camera and instagram, yet it is not the beauty of the oats that draws me to them. (shocker) Overnight oats are not only oh so delicious, but they are also a superfood that will fuel your active day in all the right ways.
I would classify myself as a very active person; I strive to throw in workout session 4-5 times a week, and on my days off, I still am pretty active. For me, a platter of fruit only in the morning doesn't cut it. Oats are an amazing combination of natural minerals and vitamins, fibre, and complex carbohydrates that fuel me for my day. They are also an excellent source of morning time protein, which is very important to a primarily plant based athlete, such as myself.
Oats are high in insoluble fibre, which is a good friend to your digestive system because it allows stool to bulk up, and because it keeps your bowel moving regularly.
Oats are also great for cholesterol absorption; along with a healthy balanced diet, oats can help lower cholesterol!
Now that we know the amazing benefits of this spectacular wholegrain, let me share with you my favorite overnight oats recipe.
One thing to keep in mind, is that I don't really use measuring cups; it is all based on approximation. I make enough oats for myself for a week, so I pretty much eyeball my ingredients when I make them. Also, I use a gluten free oat brand, because I personally don't include gluten in my diet.
My absolute favorite oats are simply cinnamon raisin protein oats, and this is what you'll need:
-Cinnamon
-Oats ( I use Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Quick Cooking oats)
-Almond Milk (I use Almond Breeze Vanilla)
-Organic Almond butter
-Raisins
-Almonds
-Raw Honey
-Raw Honey
From time to time I also like to throw in chopped dates or bananas into the mix.
Once you have all the ingredients, you are ready to mix them all together until you have reached a nice smooth consistency. I prefer an even texture, so if you are like me you don't want to have your oats too liquid-y. If there is more almond milk than oats, add more oats to even the texture. Trial and error is how I found my perfect taste, so try your batch consistently as you make it, until you find your perfect taste.
Oh and lets not forget this one tiny important detail: keep them in the refrigerator overnight, so that they are nice and cool in the morning.
I have recently found so many more oat recipe creations that I would love to try and share! Stay tuned for my continuation post on those experiences...
Have a kick start day!
With that I sign off--XO Adri
